VMP Covergirl - Kym Gable

This week’s VMP Renaissance Covergirl is……Kym Gable!🎉

Portrait of Kym Gable, an award-winning journalist and community leader, smiling confidently as part of the 50over50 Project, celebrating empowered women over 50.

Kym is a powerhouse—an award-winning journalist, storyteller, and connector who leads with heart. You probably know her from On a Positive Note on KDKA, where she shines a light on stories that matter. But beyond the camera, Kym’s also leading real change—bringing women together through her work hosting the South Hills Chapter of Inspired Women and championing causes that uplift underserved women and girls.

Now in her 50s, Kym is stepping boldly into her next chapter—cutting out what doesn’t serve her, building new friendships, and embracing life with wisdom, strength, and purpose. Her legacy? Empowerment, kindness, and showing future generations how to live authentically and unapologetically.

👉 Her advice? Take risks, trust your gut, and stop holding yourself back—because “you can’t live an extraordinary life by doing ordinary things.” 🌟

Here’s what she had to say about this time in her life…

💎 Did you have any older female role models when you were younger?

I had a 4th Grade English teacher named Joan Campbell who encouraged my love for creative writing and reading.  I remember taking note of the personal books she had on her desk that she was reading in her free time.  I would go to our tiny community library and check out the same novels and memoirs.  When she learned of this, she was impressed and we developed a kind of "apprentice" relationship that lasted for many years.  As for role models in the media/film industry, Carol Burnett was the ultimate inspiration for me.  I recognized, as an elementary student, that she had this remarkable ability - to make people laugh.  She spawned my adoration for female comediennes.

💎 How did you mark turning 50? How did that feel to you?

Like many of us, I turned 50 during COVID -- at the height of the pandemic in fact.  My husband arranged a small surprise party with a few close friends.  I felt grateful, yet a bit resentful that we couldn't celebrate in a more robust way.  However, during that time, I pledged to be more mindful of the simple blessings in life, including my twin daughters, with whom I connected with much more deeply over those months.

💎 What advice would you give your younger self?

Take more risks and don't ignore that intuitive nudge that might be pushing you to reach farther.

💎 Do you feel like you've changed since you've turned 50?

This may sound counter-intuitive for many of us who rely on social media for our businesses, our networking, and our organizations' growth, BUT I feel far less inclined to 'put myself out there' so as to gain attention, score more 'likes' or get more 'comments.'  In fact, I post only about one a week now.  Something has certainly shifted there.

💎 What positives have come from being over 50?

The wisdom I've gained that I can now share with my 20-year-old daughters.   The strength to eliminate relationships that no longer serve me or the greater good AND the permission I give myself to open up to explore NEW relationships that may serve me better, even if I feel I don't have the time or space.  Two of my dearest NEW friendships have been forged post-50.

💎 Do you have any goals or projects you're working on? What dreams do you have for the future?

I have a small home recording studio in which I do freelance voice-over gigs for companies and organizations.  I'd love to pour myself more into the realm of voice artistry and narration.  And honestly, I am very much looking forward to being a grandmother (but not too soon!)

💎 What is your best advice for other women who are coming up on turning 50? What do you 'know' now?

I know that our perceived flaws and unfortunate events and circumstances don't last very long in the eyes of others.  People forget these things very quickly.  People don't care or think about you as much as you think they do.

💎 What do you most want people to remember about you?

I want to have the ability to bring women together to help others.  As director of the South Chapter of Inspired Women Paying It Forward and in my story-telling on KDKA, I want to be remembered as someone whose compassion for others and whose determination to help those less fortunate, especially underserved women and girls, is a driving force to assemble women together to make the world a better place.

💎 Why are beautiful photos important to you right now?

I want the true essence of my 50+ year-old self to be captured in a 'legacy' kind of way.  I want my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to gaze upon these images one day and recognize and celebrate that I was an empowered female journalist that fought the stereotype that 'distinguished older gentelmen' were o.k. on the air, but aging female journalists are not.  I want there to be a recognition of familial empowerment that will fuel my future generations to engage in their own personal missions to uplift and inspire.

Congratulations Kym! It’s an honor to help you celebrate YOU and the impact you’re creating! 🎉
